Former fire captain sentenced for probation violation
A former Long Beach fire captain who lives in Huntington Beach was sentenced to four years in prison Friday for a probation violation, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.
John David Hines was charged with a violation in January after he was seen drunk at the Huntington Beach city jail. A spokesman for the Orange County Probation Department said the reason for Hines’ condition was unclear, but he apparently drank ethanol produced from filtered hand sanitizer.
Hines was sentenced in November to five years of formal probation and one year in jail. He pleaded guilty in September to injuring a cyclist while driving intoxicated with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit last April. He was also ordered to pay $102,000 in restitution to the victim.
The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported that Hines no longer works for the city of Long Beach.
