Defendant faces life in hostage case
A 54-year-old Irvine man faces five life terms, plus 40 years in prison, for allegedly taking a hostage and shooting at SWAT officers during a March 1 bank robbery, authorities said.
Myung Jae Kim is charged with 12 felonies, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a peace officer, possession of a destructible device in a public place and explosion of a destructible device stemming from his alleged involvement in a Buena Park bank robbery, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.
Kim is being held without bail at a hospital and has no scheduled court hearings.
