An 11-year-old boy who decided to raise money to fight canine cancer after losing his own German Shepherd raised nearly four times his goal at a Sunday “Bark-A-Thon” in Newport Beach.
Joe Fuller and his family raised about $3,700 for the National Canine Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit that funds cancer research, treatment and diagnosis, said Laurie Fuller, Joe’s mother.
They originally hoped to reach $1,000.
“Joe feels like he accomplished something and that’s what we set out to do,” Fuller said.
The family put together a fundraising walk around the Back Bay after their 7-year-old dog Sirius, or “Si,” died Jan. 2 of lymphoma.
About 150 showed up Sunday to participate in the event, Fuller said.
The family is now planning on making it an annual event, she said.
