GIRLS STATE DELEGATES SELECTED

The American Legion Auxiliary, Newport Harbor Post 291, has selected the 2010 Girls State Delegates & Alternates from the eight local high schools they sponsor.

Selected were Kaitlin Flanagan Morris, Corona del Mar High School; Allison Hatch and Nicole Tfaye, Costa Mesa High School; Kylie Carpenter, Estancia High School; Alexandra Kono and Emily Du, Irvine High School; Jordan Murrel and Nicole Perrier, Newport Harbor High School; Christina A. Nguyen and Mona Sleiman, Northwood High School; Sarah McCabe Frost and Emily Cramer, Sage Hill School; Negar Aram, Woodbridge High School.

The girls are academic high achievers and are involved in numerous extracurricular activities in their schools and communities. They demonstrate a high moral character and show strong leadership abilities. The schools submit names of junior girls who meet the criteria set by the auxiliary and who were then interviewed and selected by a committee.

Girls State is a one-week conference in which the girls study local, county and state government processes. This year it is being at Claremont-McKenna from June 26 to July 2. There will be about 500 women from throughout the state attending. Girls State helps young women develop leadership skills, confidence and poise while learning about their duties as United States citizens.

The American Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919. Its mission is to serve veterans, their families and their communities. Auxiliary programs encompass humanitarian and social concerns, including the welfare and care of veterans, children and youth, women’s issues and service to the community. Members donate more than $18 million and 6 million volunteer hours to communities nationwide, making it one of the largest service organizations in the nation.
