Community & Clubs:
Newport Harbor High School and the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation announce the inaugural Lights Up — A Newport Harbor Showcase of the Arts, featuring a multitude of Newport Harbor High’s top actors and singers, 19 musicians, 22 dancers and alumni artists.
The event is at 6 p.m. May 15 in the newly unveiled Robert B. Wentz Theatre at the school’s Loats Performing Arts Center.
The master of ceremonies will be alumnus Steve Johnston (’61), and will feature special guest appearances from talented alumni, including actor Anthony Zerbe (’54), actor-director Stuart Cooper (’60), Newport Beach Film Festival Executive Director Greg Schwenk (’86), LA Master Chorale opera singer Steve Pence (’97) and composer-pianist David Morihiro (’03).
Following the performance, a benefit at the Environmental Nature Center, adjacent to the campus, will include a martini bar, dinner, auction and live entertainment with a reunion performance of the popular Harbor High 1970s band Kings Road.
This one-time performance will include Kings Road band members Jeff Bitetti (’78), Terry Cline (’74), Ross Harris (’73), Jim Helfrich (’76), professional drummer John Ferraro (’73), who has toured with Barry Manilow and Boz Scaggs, and their friend Terry Lawless, the keyboard player for U2.
The honorary producer of Lights Up is motion picture director and producer Frank Marshall, a Newport Harbor High alumnus from the class of 1964.
Marshall and his wife, Kathleen Kennedy, of the Kennedy Marshall Co., have produced many movies, including “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Schindler’s List,” the “Indiana Jones” and “Back to the Future” series, “E.T.” and “The Sixth Sense,” among many others.
The fundraising goal of $100,000 will go toward upgrading classroom technology, instructional supplies, student guidance, academic assistance, professional development for faculty and more.
Tickets are $125 for the event at the theater and the dinner at the nature center, or $50 and $25 for the theater event only, and may be bought at www.NHHSLightsUp.org or by calling Newport Harbor Educational Foundation at (949) 646-1556.
