Bergman honored

UC Irvine senior Christian Bergman has been named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and is also the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week after his dominant performance Saturday.

Bergman threw a one-hit shutout at UC Davis, a game in which he faced the minimum 27 hitters.

Bergman allowed a leadoff single, but the runner was then erased trying to steal second. Bergman then retired the next 26 in a row, striking out six. UCI won the conference game, 13-0, and Bergman improved to 4-2.

It was the first shutout of Bergman’s career and his second complete game of the season.

He was a preseason All-American as a junior and a senior and earned All-Big West Conference honors in 2009 (second team) and 2008 (first team).

He is 18-11 in his college career.
