SANTA BARBARA — Jackson Carmack amassed 47 assists to help lead the Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team past Santa Margarita, 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 18-25, 16-14, to finish third in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions Saturday.
Carmack was named to the all-tournament team. Cody Caldwell led the Sailors (12-7) with 27 kills, while Austin Bagby had 12 kills, Will Connelly added eight kills and Rusty Sary had 12 digs.
Mira Costa beat Newport Harbor in the semifinals, 25-19, 25-20, 14-25, 25-20. Caldwell led with 16 kills and Carmack had 31 assists. Sary had nine kills and Bagby had six kills.

WALNUT — Newport Harbor High sophomore Ethan Cochran took first in boys’ seeded discus event, throwing a personal-best 172 feet, 11 inches Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Sailors sophomore Stevie Michaelsen was second, also throwing a person-best, 169-9

COSTA MESA — Freshman Lauren Gandi went a combined five for eight with a home run to help lead Newport Harbor High to 6-2 and 12-7 nonleague wins over Estancia Saturday.
Sailors freshman pitcher Hattie Marshall (4-1), who went three for four at the plate, struck out eight, walked two and allowed three hits in her complete game for the 6-2 win. Sophomore Mandy Legault and junior Alex Bauer both went two for four for Newport Harbor (13-4). Jill Beck led Estancia (7-8) with two hits.
In the second game, Gandi had three runs batted in, while Legault went two for four with two runs scored. Sailors freshman Breanna Lopez went two for four with an RBI and Marshall drove in two runs.
Cheyanne Flores went four for four with two runs to lead Estancia.

PALO ALTO — Senior Ryan Mix scored four goals to lead the Sea Kings in the nonleague game Saturday.
Senior Blake Burkhart led CdM (12-2) with 10 ground balls. Sophomore Michael Ortlieb had three goals and senior Randall Nelson had two goals and five assists.
