Diving club will clean ocean floor
The O.C. Spearos, a spearfishing and free diving club, will clean the ocean floor in and around Crystal Cove State Park and pick up trash on the beach Saturday morning.
Using only the breath in their lungs, O.C. Spearos members will dive to depths of up to 80 feet to retrieve underwater trash and debris.
The entry fee to visit the state park will be waived for beach and underwater clean-up volunteers during the event, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
The beach cleanup is open to the public, and volunteers may stay and enjoy the park after the event, organizers said.
Free diving is a recreational sport typified by the practice of breath-hold underwater diving. The sport of spearfishing has its roots in free diving. Participants utilize spear guns and slings to catch fish while free diving.
