Margaret Evelyn “Mej”
Johnson, 96, died peacefully
April 1, 2010, at Silverado
Senior Living-Newport
Mesa, where she had lived
since November 2003. She
was born June 9, 1913, to
George and Jessie Knox in
Kansas City, MO; graduated
from Paseo High School; and
attended junior college. She worked part time as a
secretary and was an avid church and community
volunteer. She moved from Mission Hills, KS, to
Newport Beach, CA, in 1975. She was preceded
in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Arthur
C. Johnson. Mej is survived by daughters Sandy
(Vic) Dobras, Newport Beach, and Jaren (Don)
Whitsitt, Culver City, and son Marty Johnson,
San Clemente; grandchildren Brenda Bacha, Linda
Lewin, Bob Bell, Jill Gibbs, Penny Portillo and
Jenna Johnson; great-grandchildren Brad Lewin,
Lindsay Lewin, Tyler Bell and Sofia Portillo; sister
Rachel Johnson; and niece Linda Ellis. Mej enjoyed
travel, camping, square dancing, Dixieland jazz,
OASIS activities, entertaining and serving as a helpline
counselor. She was beloved by family, friends
and caregivers. The greatest gifts she offered us
were her steady trust in God, her inner peace, and
her infectious joy in living. A private memorial at
sea is pending. Memorial gifts may be made to St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach, or
church or charity of your choice.
