Gilmore to join Hall of Fame
Australia native and three-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore is set to be inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame this summer. Gilmore, the youngest-ever inductee at age 22, has already captured U.S. Open of Surfing and Vans Triple Crown titles in addition to three consecutive Assn. of Surfing Professionals women’s world titles. Earlier this year, she was awarded the prestigious Laureus World Sports award, elevating Gilmore to among the world’s elite athletes.
Gilmore will be inducted along with Laguna Beach resident Ian Cairns and Randy Lewis at 10 a.m. Aug. 6 in front of Huntington Surf & Sport.
The 2010 Surfers’ Hall of Fame induction ceremony pays tribute to those individuals who have made an indelible mark on the sport, industry and culture of surfing.
“At only 22 years old, Stephanie is truly one of the greatest ambassadors our sport of surfing has ever seen,” said Kelly Gibson, Rip Curl USA president and chief executive, in a release. “From winning three consecutive ASP World Titles to being the ultimate brand icon for Rip Curl, she continues to push the sport, influence surf fans globally, while remaining true to herself. Rip Curl couldn’t ask for a better face for our brand.”
The Surfers’ Hall of Fame induction ceremony is free to the public. For more information, visit www.hsssurf.com/hall.
Rustlers edge Riverside
The Golden West College baseball team took advantage of six home runs and took a 9-8 Orange Empire Conference decision over the Riverside Tigers at Riverside Saturday afternoon.
Riverside (12-15, 7-6 OEC) was able to overcome the first five round-trippers and an 8-1 deficit by coming up with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. But the Rustlers struck another home run, this last one a solo shot down the left-field line with two outs in the top of the ninth by sophomore center fielder Jordan Tripp. It was Tripp’s second homer of the game.
Golden West (16-10, 7-5 OEC) received three solo home runs from sophomore third baseman A.J. Bayus, who connected in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Also in the sixth, Tripp socked a two-run blast to center field for a 6-1 Rustler lead and then eventual winning pitcher Chris Devenski — who was playing shortstop at the time — hammered a ball over the left-field fence for the Rustlers’ third home run of the inning and a 7-1 lead.
Both teams continued OEC play Tuesday, as Riverside hosted the Cypress College Chargers and Golden West visited the Santa Ana College Dons.
