Community & Clubs:

Newport Harbor Exchange Club President Jerry Nininger attended last Wednesday’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa to present the Exchange Club’s Field of Honor. It will be from May 14 to 17 at Castaways Park, Dover Drive and 16th Street in Newport Beach.

Nininger shared the three-minute video of the forthcoming event.

To honor men and women in the military it will feature 1,776 flags each bearing 50 stars and flying from 8-foot poles. Rotarians were invited to purchase a 3-by-5-foot flag for a tax-deductible donation of $45. Proceeds will be donated to service men and women, other Americanism projects and youth projects sponsored by the Exchange Club.

The weekend’s opening ceremony will happen at noon May 14. It will be an impressive event that the family will want to see.

I filled out the purchase form and dedicated the flag to Sgt. Andrew Harron McConnell, grandson of one of my Rotary friends, who was killed Sept. 14, 2009, in Afghanistan.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE PROJECT

The Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise Vocational Service Project with the Salvation Army and Working Wardrobes began March 27. There are 16 participants in the group and the coaches for the day were John Gregg, Donna Cody and Phil Reynolds. The program helps participants get ready for job interviews in today’s economic climate.

The remaining schedule for workshops includes Saturday and April 24, and May 1 and 4, the Rotary Club meeting will be at Working Wardrobes, 3030 Pullman St., Costa Mesa.

The participants attend their final workshop and graduate May 8, at the Salvation Army headquarters in Tustin.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

“There are two kinds of people in this world: the givers and the takers. The takers eat better; the givers sleep better.”
