COSTA MESA — The Vanguard University baseball team is ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, but it suffered a loss to No. 12-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University Wednesday.

However, the Lions responded to that setback with a 9-7 Golden State Athletic Conference win Thursday at Vanguard.

Vanguard (26-7, 17-5 in conference) trailed, 6-4, after six innings, but the Lions used a five-run seventh inning to gain control of the game.

Designated hitter Eric Krzysiak and center fielder Tyson Leighton were key hitters for Vanguard.

Krzyiak went three for four with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Leighton was two for four with five RBIs and two runs. He hit a three-run home run in the seventh.

Outfielder Brandon Young went two for four with three runs.

Point Loma Nazarene dropped to 26-9-1, 15-7.

Pitcher James McGeary came on in relief in the fifth inning, and allowed just one hit and one run to improve to 2-0.

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 8, Fullerton 1

COSTA MESA — Brad Fisher and Yannick Lepage stood out for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Fisher won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Lepage to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-0.

Lepage also won at love at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

OCC improved to 13-4, 7-3 in conference.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 5, Fullerton 4

FULLERTON — Melissa Boyer, Nicole Naughton and Anna Walinowicz each earned tight victories in singles for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Boyer defeated Luz Jimenez, 36-, 6-1, 6-3. Naughton beat Joanna Karanovic, 1-6, 6-7, 6-3.

Walinowicz edged Fullerton’s Madeline Hovarter, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

The Pirates also won twice in doubles, with Naughton and Walinowicz winning at No. 3 doubles to help OCC improve to 9-3, 5-3 in conference.
