NORTHRIDGE — Junior third baseman Brian Hernandez homered in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and propel the No. 24-ranked Anteaters to a 5-3 victory at Big West Conference rival Cal State Northridge Friday.
Senior catcher Francis Larson hit at three-run homer in the UCI fourth, the 20th of his career which is now just one off the pace of the school record shared by Cody Cipriano and Jaime Martinez.
Senior Christian Bergman struck out seven in six innings to earn the victory, while senior Kyle Necke pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings to collect his fourth save.
Senior first baseman Jeff Cusick was three for five to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. He also scored a run for the winners (16-8, 2-0 in conference).
Hernandez and sophomore shortstop D.J. Crumlich both went two for four.
Crumlich, who entered the series hitting .152 in 33 at-bats, is three for six against the Matadors (16-9, 0-2) to lift his average to .289.
The series concludes today at 1 p.m.

COSTA MESA — The Pirates led, 7-4, through seven innings in the nonconference game Friday.
Matt Glazier homered and drove in three for the Pirates (14-10), for whom Jordan Beck went three for four and Kris Martin was three for five.
Beck, Martin, Trevor Jensen and Mychal Stokes all had one hit and one RBI for the Pirates.
Palomar improved to 13-10.

TEMPE, Ariz. — UC Irvine senior John Chin shot seven-under par 64 in the second round Friday at the Karsten Golf Course.
Chin, who shot 72 in the opening round, is in third place at six-under 136 after two rounds, three shots behind the co-leaders.
UCI and Oregon are tied for fifth place after 36-holes, 15 shots off the pace of leader and tournament host Arizona State.
The final 18 holes are scheduled today.

LOS ANGELES — The No. 6-ranked Trojans rallied for a 32-20, 28-30, 21-30, 30-22, 15-7, home victory in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Thursday at the Galen Center.
Carson Clark had a career-high 30 kills and added 14 digs for UCI (11-13, 6-11 in conference).
Jordan DuFault had 22 kills and Anthony Spittle amassed 65 assists for the Anteaters, who are 0-8 in five-game matches this season.
USC (12-9, 9-8) received a career-high 28 kills from Tony Ciarelli.

COSTA MESA — Patricia Olvera threw a six-hit shutout to cap a nonconference sweep of visiting Simpson on Wednesday at the Lions won the second game, 3-0, after posting an 11-1 triumph in the opener.
Olvera improved to 5-4, thanks to runs batted in from Stephanie Leisenring and Angela St. Croix.
Amanda Young went three for three with three RBIs and Melissa Forrester was two for two with three RBIs in Game 1 for Vanguard (23-19).
Amanda Omahen was three for three in the opener and had four hits on the day for Vanguard.
