Eight locals earn All-CIF honors
Edison High junior Dylan Garrity has been selected to the All-CIF Southern Section Division II-AA first-team for boys’ basketball. Garrity is joined on the second team by Marina senior Brendan Holmes.
Ocean View seniors Anthony Brown, Avery Johnson and Ryan Okwudibonye are first-team Division III-AA honorees, with teammate Aaron Delgado on the second team.
Additionally, Brethren Christian seniors Austin Loeb and Austin Wenger earned first-team All-CIF Division V-A honors.
Garrity averaged 17.4 points per game for Edison, which finished second in the Sunset League and advanced to the Division II-AA quarterfinals. Holmes, who averaged 22 points per game this year, finished his career as Marina’s all-time leading scorer and second on the all-time CIF list for three-pointers made.
Brown and Johnson each averaged 17.5 points per game for the Seahawks and Okwudibonye added 8.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Delgado was also a key guard for Ocean View, the Division III-AA runner-up which advanced to the Southern California Regional Divsiion III semifinals. Loeb and Wenger led Brethren Christian to an Academy League championship and the quarterfinals of the Division V-A playoffs.
Samuelson sisters highlight girls’ list
Edison junior Bonnie Samuelson was a first-team selection and freshman sister Karlie a second-team honoree in the All-CIF Southern Section Division II-AA team for girls’ basketball.
Bonnie Samuelson tallied 27.1 points and nine rebounds per game for the Sunset League champion Chargers, who advanced to the Division II-AA semifinals. She led the county in scoring and set the school’s single-season scoring record with 791 points.
Karlie Samuelson, a point guard, was second on the team in scoring with 16.4 points per game and led Edison with six assists per contest.
Also, Huntington Beach sophomore guard Kelsey Minato was a second-team Division II-AA honoree.
Minato scored 14.6 points per game and helped the Oilers reach the Division II-AA quarterfinals.
Brethren Christian senior Stacey Helfer was named to the Division V-A second team.
All-Star football nominees announced
Nominees have been announced for the 51st annual Brea Lions Orange County All-Star football game, and Brethren Christian, Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Marina and Ocean View all have selections.
The game is set for 7:15 p.m. July 16, at Orange Coast College.
Final roster selections are expected to be made later this month.
