High School Roundup:

LAGUNA BEACH — A big inning helped the Costa Mesa High baseball team earn a big 12-4 Orange Coast League win over host Laguna Beach on Thursday afternoon.

The Mustangs scored six runs in the fifth inning — all with two outs — to break the game open and help them improve to 6-5, 2-2 in league.

Junior P.J. Maloney ran his pitching record to 3-2, going six innings and allowing four runs and seven hits.

“[Laguna’s] a very good fastball hitting team,” Costa Mesa Coach Jim Kiefer said. “P.J.’s strengths are to throw his change-up, throw his curveball, and keep hitters off-balance. I thought he did a wonderful job of that, and defensively we did a great job in supporting him.”

On offense, senior Brandon Kelly went three for five with two doubles and four RBIs. Seniors Andrew Fulkerson and Ryan Boulger, along with junior Tyler Sheffner, also had doubles, and senior center fielder Jesse Fox was two for four with two RBIs as the Mustangs pounded out 13 hits.

Costa Mesa batted around in each of the first two innings, jumping out to a 6-0 lead before the Breakers (8-5, 2-2) rallied to slim the margin to 6-4.

Sheffner made several highlight-reel defensive plays at third base.

“He’s a very good athlete,” Kiefer said. “It’s only his second week of playing third base, but he’s adapted very quickly.”
