High School Roundup:

WHITTIER — Corona del Mar High senior Danny Busch earned second place in the 152-pound division at the CIF Southern Section Coastal Division tournament Saturday at Whittier High.

It is the highest finish for a CdM wrestler since 2002, when Steven Russell was a champion, Coach Gary Almquist said.

Busch, the Pacific Coast League champion, recorded three wins after a bye. He won, 7-3, then, 6-5, and in the semifinals recorded a 3-1 victory. In the final, he lost by pin.

Busch, who is 39-5, has recorded 232 takedowns this season, which is a school record, according to Almquist.

Busch will compete in the CIF Masters Meet, which takes place Friday and Saturday at Temecula Valley High. He’ll try to place in the top nine to advance to the state tournament in Bakersfield.

CdM had four other wrestlers who were one match from placing in the top six, Almquist said. They were, Chad Caraway (135), Jake Starnes (171), Cody Forrest (189) and Nick Delgado (215).

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Newport Harbor High senior Rene Escolero, who was fourth in the Sunset League at 215 pounds, finished sixth Saturday. The top five advance to CIF Masters Meet.

Escolero won five of eight matches Friday and Saturday at Fountain Valley High to finish 34-12 this season.

Junior Ryan Cerrato (152), senior John Leyva (160), senior Nathan Dickey (171), and junior Bradley Beaudette (189) advanced to Saturday’s competition, Coach Dominic Bulone said.

Lightning on road?

As of now, the Sage Hill School boys’ soccer team will play at Saddleback Valley Christian Tuesday for its CIF Southern Section Division VII second-round match because of a ball violation.

J.R. Tolver, the Lightning boys’ athletic director, said he plans to find out more about the ruling on Monday because he is not sure Sage Hill broke CIF rule 2400, Article 240. The rule states, teams must use a Spalding soccer ball.

The Lightning (19-8-2) beat Cornerstone Christian, 11-2, in Camarillo Thursday, so they know the ball violation did not occur there.

Tolver said he called the CIF Southern Section office Friday, but a secretary told him that she did not know when the violation happened.

“They assumed it was something for last year,” Tolver said. “I’ll get to the matter on Monday.”

Sage Hill Coach Noureddine El-Alam said he doesn’t know anything about a ball violation, this season or last season, Tolver said. Tolver, in his first year as athletic director, also called former A.D. Jon Poffenberger and he was unaware of a ball violation.

Saddleback Valley Christian played at home in San Juan Capistrano Thursday, beating Calvary Chapel of Downey, 1-0. The Warriors were then expecting to play on the road, but instead are at home again, but it counts as Sage Hill’s home game in the playoffs.

The coin flips for the quarterfinals have already been made.

If the Lightning win Tuesday, they’ll need Santa Clara to win at Victor Valley Christian, because they won that coin flip. But Sage Hill lost the coin flip against Victor Valley Christian.

“I’m trying to get them the home game, because that’s what they deserve,” Tolver said of his boys’ soccer team.
