Chargers rewarded with high seeding

The Edison High girls’ basketball team was happy to learn that it got a No. 3 seed into the Division II-AA playoffs after being ranked fourth in the division for much of the year. The Chargers are happy because it means they wouldn’t have to play defending champion and top-seeded Brea Olinda until the finals, which would be a rematch of a game Brea won last year.

If the seeds hold up, the Chargers would play No. 2-seeded Villa Park in a semifinal.

“It’s really good,” Coach Dan Wiley said. “We’re excited.”

Edison (20-4), led by juniors Bonnie Samuelson and Christina Marquette and freshman Karlie Samuelson, hosts Kaiser tonight and with a win, would play either Heritage or Tesoro in Saturday’s second round.

Huntington Beach is also in Division II-AA and is the seventh-seeded team. The Oilers, led by senior Meghan White and sophomores Maya Kennedy and Kelsey Minato, open at home tonight against Thousand Oaks.

“Our bracket got kind of messed up,” Oilers Coach Russell McClurg said. “We have a really tough first-round game for being the No. 7 seed. We called CIF and asked for an explanation but they didn’t have one. But [Thousand Oaks] is a team we’re not taking lightly at all.”

Marina (14-13), which finished tied for second in the Sunset League, will be at home Thursday night for a Division I-A first-round game against No. 9-seeded Chino Hills.

Ocean View (13-13), the No. 2 team from the Golden West League, hosts Pioneer League at-large El Segundo in a Division IV-AA first-round game. The winner could advance to play No. 2-seeded Bishop Montgomery.

“That’s kind of the way it was last year, too,” said Coach Kim Morris, whose team lost to CIF champion Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in 2009. “But we’ve been playing well. We could be dangerous. They’ve got nothing to lose.”

Ocean View scored 31 points in the first quarter of its final league game against Saddleback. The Seahawks are led by sophomore point guard Hannah Ferguson, whose press break sets up the Seahawks’ offense, and junior Kelli Berry.

Los Amigos (14-8), an at-large team from the Garden Grove League, plays at No. 3-seeded Bishop Amat in the Division III-AA first round.

Liberty Christian (14-9) is the No. 10-seeded team in the Division VI-AA playoffs and travels to Avalon in the first round.

All first-round games are at 7 p.m. tonight, with second-round games at 7 p.m. Saturday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison, which finished No. 3 in the Sunset League, plays at Redondo Union on Friday in a first-round game. A win and the Chargers (12-5-3) would likely match up with El Toro, the Sea View League champion and No. 3 seed in the bracket.

Redondo Union is in the Bay League, typically strong for soccer.

“It should be a good game,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said. “We match up pretty well. I think we can match up with anyone in the top 10. The girls have really worked hard this year and we seem to improve upon our mistakes.”

Ocean View, which finished second in the Golden West League, goes on the road Friday for a Division V first-round game against El Segundo. Also in Division V, Garden Grove League champion Los Amigos hosts Paramount Friday in a first-round game.

All games start at 3 p.m. The second round in Division I and Division V is scheduled for Wednesday.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Edison won a CIF Southern Section Division I wild-card game over Northwood on Tuesday, 14-1, behind six goals from Danielle Warde, three from Alys Williams and two each from Haley Kunert and Risa Burke. The Chargers, the third-place team in the Sunset League, played at Rosary in a first-round game Wednesday. Edison (21-6) had already topped Rosary twice this season. A win over Rosary could mean a quarterfinal date Friday with Corona del Mar, a team the Chargers beat for the first time in program history at the Irvine Southern California Championships.

Other Division I teams in the bracket include Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach. The Barons topped Millikan, 13-1, in a wild-card game Tuesday and played at top-seeded defending champion Dos Pueblos in a first-round game Wednesday.

Kayla Robert and Marisa Young each scored three goals against Millikan for Fountain Valley (21-7).

The Oilers, the second-place team in the Sea View League, traveled to Santa Barbara for a first-round game Wednesday.

Ocean View, the No. 3 seed out of the Golden West League, topped Mayfield, 12-10, in a Division VI wild-card game Tuesday. Junior Holland McNabb scored eight goals for the Seahawks and Cami McNabb made 13 saves. Ocean View plays at Elsinore in today’s first round.

Los Amigos plays at La Quinta in a Division VII first-round game today. The Lobos were the No. 2 team out of the Garden Grove League.
