Heenan heads to UCSB
Newport Harbor High senior libero Kelly Heenan has committed to play for the UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball team next season, said Heenan’s sister, Jamie.
Heenan, a Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team pick, helped the Sailors (33-6) win the Sunset League, CIF Southern Section Division I-AA and CIF State Division I championships.
Heenan earned first-team All-Sunset League honors after finishing with 166 digs. She is the second Newport Harbor senior to join UCSB, which went 22-8 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth last season. Middle blocker Katey Thompson signed with the Gauchos earlier.

Future Lion shines
Taylor Spikes, who has signed to play women’s basketball next season at Vanguard University, set a state record with 16 three-pointers Tuesday to help Hanford High defeat Mt. Whitney, 117-31.
Spikes, who scored a school-record 51 points, helped the Bullpups net 27 three-pointers, also a state record for one game.
Her 16 threes surpassed the 14 made by Danielle Viglione of Fair Oaks High in 1992. Viglione went on to play at Texas and in the WNBA with the Sacramento Monarchs.
Vanguard Coach Russ Davis called Spikes one of the best high school shooters he has ever seen.
“She can make them from 35 feet,” Davis said. “There’s a pretty good chance I will run a play or two for her.”
Hanford had tied the state record held by Yosemite, with 21 three-pointers in a December victory. But Yosemite made 23 three-pointers in a game earlier this month.
