Boys & Girls Club holding registration

Basketball league registration for girls in kindergarten through ninth grade will be through Feb. 26 at the Boys & Girls Club Main Branch in Laguna. Weekly one-hour practices begin March 23 and games begin April 13. Volunteer opportunities are available for parents interested in coaching.

All participants must be members of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach; membership fee is $150 per year. Scholarships are available for qualifying families. League fee is $100 per player and includes a new uniform. Annual sponsorship opportunities are also available for $500 and include a colorful banner hung in the club’s gym for one year.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach serves more than 1,500 children ages 5 to 18 living in Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo and the surrounding communities. For more information, call the Boys & Girls Club at (949) 494-2535.

YMCA hoops league sign-ups still open

The South Coast YMCA still has slots available for the upcoming winter season. The competitive basketball league is open to boys and girls ages of 6 to 13. This session, which kicks off Saturday, is designed for children who have played advanced basketball and are ready to participate in the next level of competition. The league emphasizes team play, sportsmanship and basketball fundamentals.

Participants will play against teams from their home base YMCA, as well as other participating YMCA sites across Orange County. The games will take place Saturdays at the South County YMCA, 29831 Crown Valley Parkway, Laguna Niguel.

This season will introduce new features to the league, including an all-star game, one-on-one tournaments and an all-star skills competition. The teams are divided along age-appropriate categories “” ages 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 “” for more equal distribution of skill levels. The height of the rim is 8 or 10 feet, depending on the age group.
