IRVINE — Corona del Mar High senior Danny Busch won twice Saturday and became the Pacific Coast League champion in the 152-pound division at the league finals at Irvine High.
Busch, who finished third in the PCL as a 145-pounder last year, has bounced back in a big way this season, CdM Coach Gary Almquist said. Busch improved his record to 36-4.
As the top seed, he recorded a pin in 1 minute, 47 seconds. Then he earned a 12-4 win to capture the league individual crown.
“I have never gotten first place in anything,” Busch said. “This is my first time getting first place. I’m really stoked.”
Busch said he has been wrestling since his freshman year and has always wanted to be a CIF state champion. He’ll start his quest for the state tournament in two weeks at Whittier High.
“We expect him to go top nine and be [in the state tournament],” Almquist said.
Busch credited his coaches and summer wrestling camp for his success.
CdM had two wrestlers who finished second: Jake Starnes (171) and Nick Delgado (215).
Hunter Thomas (125), Chad Caraway (135) and Cody Forrest (189) each finished third for the Sea Kings.
