IRVINE — The visiting Gauchos, ranked No. 11, surprised the No. 4-ranked Anteaters, 32-30, 30-32, 30-28, 30-25, at the Bren Events Center Friday to make it three straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation losses for the defending NCAA champions.
Jeff Menzel had a match-high 27 kills for the Gauchos (2-5, 2-2 in conference), as UCI fell to 4-4, 1-3.
Cullen Irons had 22 kills and 10 digs for the visitors.
Senior Cole Reinholm and freshman Connor Hughes came off the bench to post 16 and 14 kills, respectively, to lead the ’Eaters, who had 38 assists from redshirt freshman setter Ian Wynne.
Returning All-Americans Jordan DuFault (seven), Carson Clark (five) and Kevin Wynne combined for just 14 kills. Kevin Wynne had five block assists.
UCI posted a 12.5-4 edge in team blocks and had seven of the match’s 12 aces.
UCSB hit .340 as a team, 51 points better than UCI.
