MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 79, UC Irvine 77

DAVIS — Sophomore Eric Wise had 25 points and eight rebounds for the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Thursday.

Wise made nine of 13 field-goal attempts, and was six for 10 from the foul line as UCI fell to 8-9, 2-3 in conference.

Senior guard Michael Hunter had 12 points and junior Pavol Losonsky had 10 for the ’Eaters.

Davis, which shot 53.3% from the field, including 73.3% in the second half (11 for 15) is now 7-10, 3-2.

Dominic Calegari made all 10 of his field-goal attempts, including two three-pointers, to pace the winners with 28 points.

UCI closed within 75-74 with 27 seconds left, but Mark Payne (23 points) hit four free throws to help the Aggies prevail.

UCI visits Pacific Saturday night.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 77, UC Irvine 44

IRVINE — Senior Rebecca Maessen led the Anteaters with 11 points and three steals in the Big West Conference game Thursday at the Bren Events Center.

Sophomore Mikah Maly-Karros, who came in averaging 18.1 points and 10.9 rebounds, had four points and eight rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.

UCI shot 31.5% from the field, made just one of 11 three-point attempts, and had 24 turnovers to fall to 4-13, 1-4 in conference.

Davis is 11-6, 4-1.
