Mayne to tell story at OCC

Brent Mayne, a former major league catcher, will share his story about how a boy from the playgrounds and baseball diamonds of Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College played in the big leagues for 15 years Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. at OCC’s gymnasium foyer.

Admission is free, as Mayne promotes his book, “The Art of Catching.” The event is part of a Friends of the OCC Library and the OCC Foundation program.

Mayne, who also played at Cal State Fullerton, will touch on topics such as work ethic, luck and what it takes to make it to the top.

There will be time set aside for questions. Mayne will also offer tips on catching mechanics for young baseball players.

Mayne was a major league catcher from 1989 to 2004. He played most of his career with the Kansas City Royals, but also spent time with the Mets, A’s, Giants, Rockies, Diamondbacks and Dodgers.

Mayne attended OCC in 1987 and played baseball for his father Mike Mayne, who coached baseball at OCC for 15 years.

Brent Mayne was inducted into OCC’s Hall of Fame in 2006.
