Twins excel at Mammoth Mountain skiing event
When they had pacifiers in their mouths, they had skis on their feet.
Lela and Logan McCarroll are both just 6 years old, so they aren’t exactly crafty veterans. But both can get it done on a ski course and they showed that Saturday at Mammoth Mountain.
Lela finished first in the 6-year-old girls’ age group in her first race in the Mighty Mite division. Twin brother Logan was second in the 6-year-old boys’ event at the Kittredge Fun Cup. Lela’s time of 27.93 seconds on her second run was the second-best among all of the nearly 60 girls competing in the event, ages 6-8. Logan’s time of 26.68 seconds, on his first run, placed him second among 6-year-old boys.
Their dad, Peter McCarroll, is not surprised. He and his wife Lisa are longtime skiers. Plus the twins’ older brother, Larsen, 9, is accomplished on the slopes, as well. He won gold as an 8-year-old and has now moved up from the Mighty Mite division to the J5 division. The kids all have dual citizenship and hope to make it to the national level, where they could ski on either the United States or German team, Peter McCarroll said.
“Me and my wife practice with them on the course quite a bit,” he said. “My wife goes up there every weekend with the kids When Larsen won the gold, the announcer was like, ‘Laguna Beach?’ He was in shock. Like a kid from Laguna would win a Mammoth contest. It doesn’t really happen.”
Two weekends ago, Larsen made it to the final four among 85 competitors in the Kittredge Fun Cup J5 race.
Larsen is a fourth grader at Top of the World Elementary. Lela and Logan are both kindergartners at the Manzanita campus of Anneliese’s School.
