Edison’s Boswell out for season

Edison High boys’ basketball senior Kyle Boswell will miss the rest of the season after breaking his left hand against San Clemente on Saturday, Chargers Coach Rich Boyce said Monday night.

Boswell, who earlier this season became Edison’s all-time leading scorer, was going up for a lay-up against the Tritons. Boyce said he was then shoved in the back for an intentional foul and hit the wall behind the basket hard.

Boswell is right-handed. It was originally thought that he might be able to return for the CIF playoffs, but Boyce said his star guard is out at least three months.

Boswell, a UC Santa Barbara commit, was leading Edison with 23.9 points per game, second in Orange County.

The Chargers (14-1), who won three tournaments in December, lost their first game of the season to San Clemente, 57-53.

“It’s tough,” said Boyce, who lost Boswell for much of last year to a back injury. “Unfortunately, we had to deal with it last year, too. We’ll adjust and find a way, like we always do.

“The kids have been playing great. They’ve been doing a lot of the things that make coaches happy. We’re just going to have to pick up the slack, that’s all.”

The Chargers open Sunset League play at Los Alamitos at 7 p.m. Friday. Edison and Los Alamitos are considered front-runners for the league title.

“They’re very athletic and tough to defend,” Boyce said of the Griffins (11-4). “We’ll have to play real well.”

In other league openers this week, Fountain Valley (8-6) plays host to Newport Harbor on Friday night in another Sunset League opener, while Marina (10-5) plays host to Esperanza.

Ocean View (10-3) opens Golden West League play at Westminster on Friday, while Huntington Beach (4-10) plays host to Northwood.

Brethren Christian (11-4) opened Academy League play Tuesday night with a 59-51 victory over Oxford Academy, paced by 28 points from Austin Wenger. The Warriors host St. Margaret’s tonight. Los Amigos (5-5) won’t begin league play until it hosts Santiago on Wednesday.
