Plenty of local flavor

Costa Mesa High senior lineman Travis Whitlock and Estancia junior lineman Omar Gutierrez received first-team All-Orange Coast League recognition in football.

Whitlock, the league’s Lineman of the Year, helped the Mustangs (6-5, 3-1 in league) to a runner-up finish in league and the program’s first overall winning season since 2002. Whitlock, a Newport-Mesa Dream Team pick, finished with 94 tackles, eight sacks and 16 tackles for losses. As a center, he recorded 27 pancake blocks.

Gutierrez, a Dream Team pick, led Estancia (6-5, 2-2 in league) back to the CIF Southern Section Southern Division playoffs after missing it in 2008. Gutierrez, a repeat first-team selection, led all local players with 10 sacks and he had 69 tackles.

Whitlock is one of seven Mustangs making the first team. The others were senior wide receiver/linebacker Brian Waldron, senior wide receiver/cornerback Luis Gomez, junior left tackle Andrew Albers, senior quarterback Todd Davis, senior lineman Corbin Kay and senior running back/linebacker Josh Erno.

The other three Eagles on the first team were senior linebacker/running back Sean Davis, senior linebacker Josh Dominguez and junior center Diego Moya.

Waldron, a repeat first-team pick, led the area with 56 catches for 836 yards and six touchdowns. As a linebacker, Waldron made 89 tackles and intercepted five passes, including returning one for a touchdown.

Gomez, a repeat first-team pick, finished with 46 catches for 586 yards and four touchdowns. Gomez ran for 357 yards and four touchdowns.

Davis threw for 1,712 yards and 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Davis also rushed for three touchdowns.

Costa Mesa Coach Jeremy Osso said Davis finished with a single-game school-record five touchdown passes against Godinez.

Erno had 553 yards and two touchdowns on 77 carries. He finished with 15 receptions for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, Erno had 84 tackles, caused four fumbles, made three sacks, and had five tackles for losses.

Davis finished with 80 tackles for Estancia. He rushed for 561 yards and seven touchdowns on 75 carries.

Dominguez led the Eagles with 83 tackles, caused three fumbles and recovered three fumbles.

Laguna Beach’s Chris Paul was named the league’s MVP.
