Bergsma seals win for CdM

GARDEN GROVE — Katie Bergsma made a layup with three seconds left to give the Corona del Mar High girls’ basketball team a 43-42 victory over Godinez in the first round of the Garden Grove Tournament Saturday.

Bergsma scored 17 points to lead the Sea Kings (7-5). Her final points capped a 6-0 run in the final 30 seconds. Ellie Nadal began the spurt with the two free throws. Then Gabby Rapp scored on a putback with 11 seconds left.

CdM was awarded possession after a jump ball and Bergsma then scored on an inbounds play.

The Sea Kings will play against Capistrano Valley Monday at 10:30 a.m.

This week is referred to as Winter Break for Newport Harbor High students, but the Sailors are hardly resting during their time off.

They left for Portland, Ore. Sunday to compete in the North Marion Holiday Classic and arrived back in Orange County Thursday. They spent Christmas with their families and then went back to work Saturday.

It doesn’t stop there. Newport Harbor will play three more games Monday through Wednesday. Then the Sailors will play against Estancia Jan. 2 and face Back Bay rival Corona del Mar Jan. 5 before opening Sunset League play at Fountain Valley Jan. 8.

“I told the kids, this is the meat of our schedule,” Newport Harbor Coach Larry Hirst said. “This could make it or break it for us. If anything is going to prepare for us league it would be this, not just so much physically, but mentally.”

To ease the pressure a bit, Hirst did his best to make the trip to Oregon memorable. The Sailors visited the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry. They were also granted a special tour at the Nike plant in Portland.

“That was fun,” Hirst said. “When it’s all said and done, the kids will talk more about the Portland trip than they do about league.”

Against the Bruins Saturday, Chris Anderson scored 10 points for the Sailors who dropped to 6-5 after their loss in the first round of the Estancia Coast Classic. Cody Caldwell, Austin Bagby and Ethan Ayres added eight points each.

Newport Harbor will play against Norco Monday at 10:30 a.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

COSTA MESA — Alex Morton had 12 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Sailors in the first round of the Costa Mesa tournament Saturday.

Coleen Mead had five points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals, Kasey Thompson had four points, four rebounds and one steal and Mandy Legault had seven rebounds, one assist and one steal for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors will continue tournament play against Compton Monday at 1:30 p.m.
