Ocean View’s Afusia earns top honor

Ocena View High senior Kody Afusia has been named the Defensive Player of the Year in the Golden West League, as voted on by league coaches.

Afusia was joined on the first-team by Seahawks sophomore running back Tim Robinson, and senior defensive lineman Charlie Webb.

Nolan Tippy, Blake Walker and Michael Congelliere earned second-team honors.

Segerstrom senior linebacker/fullback Justin Millers earned league MVP honors, while Westminster senior running back Jose Ortiz was Offensive Player of the Year.

Segerstrom senior defensive end Hector Diaz earned Lineman of the Year honors.

Ocean View finished 4-6, 1-4 in league.

Pestolesi earns West Region nod

UC Irvine junior women’s volleyball player Kari Pestolesi, an Edison High alumna, has earned American Volleyball Coaches Assn. West Region honorable mention for the third time.

Pestolesi, a three-time All-Big West first-team performer, topped the Anteaters in kills with 437, aces with 41 and was second in digs with 442. An AVCA National Player of the Week, she accumulated 23 double-double (kills-digs) matches this season.

Pestolesi finished the season ranked fourth in the Big West in kills, third in aces and sixth in digs.

UCI finished 22-8, reaching 20 wins for the fifth time in school history. The eight losses were UCI’s fewest since 1978, and the .733 winning percentage was the best in program history.

UCI finished 11-5 in the Big West, tied for second.
