Valencia Tournament

PLACENTIA — Senior J.J. Rodriguez scored three goals and had an assist to lead Estancia High to semifinal and final wins Tuesday at Valencia High.

Rodriguez scored the game-winner on a header with five minutes left in a 2-1 semifinal win over California of Whittier.

In the title game, Calvary Chapel took a 2-0 lead, but Rodriguez scored twice in the final half to force a penalty-kick shootout.

Ramiro Marquez, Alan Anaya and Rodriguez all converted their PKs and goalkeeper Edgar Vega made three straight saves to open the shootout, giving the Eagles (6-6-2), the program’s first tournament crown since 1996, Coach Robert Castellano said.

Martin Garcia had two assists against Calvary Chapel and senior captain Earvin Bajana also sparkled on defense, Castellano said.

Ricardo Esquivel had a goal and Ricky Gomez had an assist against Cal Hi.

The Eagles have won five straight games.

PLACENTIA — Freshman goalie Enrique Salazar stopped two penalty-kick opportunities and converted one himself to help the Estancia High frosh-soph team defeat Servite on penalty kicks in the title game Monday at Kraemer Middle School.

Salazar, who was named MVP of the tournament, in which Estancia won its four games, made six saves to help forge a 1-1 tie in regulation against Servite.

Gustavo Venegas scored the goal in regulation for Estancia.

Converting penalty kicks for the Eagles in the shootout were Alex Esquivel, Alex Duarte, Daniel Cabrera and Salazar.

Estancia’s tournament also included group-play wins over Sunny Hills, 1-0, and Ganesha, 4-1.

The Eagles defeated Northwood, 1-0, in the semifinals.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Junior Cody Caldwell scored 16 points for the Sailors in the semifinals of the North Marion Classic Tuesday.

Senior Austin Bagby had 11 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Chris Anderson scored 11 points for the Sailors, who play in the third-place game today at 5:30 p.m.

NEWPORT COAST — Ava Soleimany scored eight points for the Lightning in the nonleague game against visiting California Academy of Math & Science Tuesday.

Hannah Jeffrey scored seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Sage Hill (4-3), which will play host to Fairmont Prep Jan. 2 at 4:30 p.m.
