It was a great end to a four-year varsity career for Huntington Beach High girls’ volleyball player Kellie Turner.
Now, the awards have come rolling in.
Turner, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, was named co-MVP of the Sea View League in voting by league coaches. On Monday, she was also acknowledged as a first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I selection, in voting by the Southern Section Girls Volleyball Coaches’ Selection Committee.
Turner was a big part of the success all season long for the Oilers (19-13), who shared the Sea View League title and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division I-A championship match, as well as the quarterfinals of the CIF State Division I playoffs.
The team captain had 308 kills, second on the team, as well as 189 digs, also second. She was joined on the Sea View League first team by senior teammate Haleigh Hampton.
Hampton, a 6-6 middle blocker who has committed to Long Beach State, led the Oilers with 329 kills and 77 blocks, 39 of those solo blocks. She also earned All-CIF Southern Section Division I second-team honors.
The Oilers’ Aly Torline, a sophomore opposite, earned second-team all-league accolades.
Turner shared the Sea View League MVP award with El Toro senior Christina Bauch. Carly Wopat, a senior middle blocker for CIF champion Dos Pueblos, was named Division I Player of the Year.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Huntington Beach High senior goalie Michael Bailey has earned third-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I honors, as selected by the Southern California Water Polo Coaches’ Assn.
Bailey helped the Oilers, who finished 3-2 in the Sea View League, to a CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs wild-card win over Beckman before losing to top-seeded Newport Harbor.
Bailey was joined on the first-team All-Sea View League list by sophomore teammate John Lovat. Max Schultz and Jameson Shively, both sophomores for Huntington Beach, were named to the second-team.
Los Amigos, the Garden Grove League champion, was also well-represented on the Division VII All-CIF lists.
Senior goalie David Nguyen earned first-team status, while senior Daniel Cabrera was on the second team.
Seniors Ryan Dinh and Michael Gonzalez earned third-team status.
