Dan Petrone has resigned as football coach at Marina High, the school announced Tuesday.

Petrone finished his third year has head coach of the Vikings in November.

In an e-mail to school administrators, Petrone wrote, in part, “Due to some serious personal obligations in my family that require my full attention, I must resign my position as head football coach at Marina High School. I met with [principal] Dr. [Paul] Morrow before Thanksgiving break and we mutually agreed this was in the best interest of the football program.”

Marina went a combined 6-24 in Petrone’s three-year tenure, including a 1-9 mark this year. The Vikings have not won a Sunset League game since 2004.

“I thank God for this opportunity, the players, coaches, parents and faculty that supported me, and I offer forgiveness to any who ridiculed or condemned me, the coaches, any players, or boosters,” Petrone wrote. “May the next head coach receive your full support, and build on top of the new foundation that has been laid, for prosperous years to come. I wish the players, parents and coaches the best of future success.”
