Free art workshop offered Nov. 28
Studio Arts Gallery is holding a free Holiday and Gift Tag workshop.
The 90-minute workshop will be conducted by artist Claudia Olsen and gallery owner Rebecca Barber at 11 a.m. Nov. 28 in the courtyard of the Old Pottery Place, 1200 S. Coast Hwy.
Workshop participants will be given a variety of materials to create three tags or card. Experience is not required.

Van Hamersveld to show at Surf Gallery
Artist and designer John Van Hamersveld will exhibit his perspective of the ocean lifestyle culture at the Surf Gallery. An opening reception is from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
Van Hamersveld’s “Billabong Pipeline Wave” print, along with 18 other works, will be on display including several never-before-seen paintings.
Van Hamersveld has a long history with Orange County surfing. His poster for the 1966 surfing movie “Endless Summer,” was born at his kitchen table in Dana Point more than five decades ago.
The image was destined to become an internationally recognized icon of Southern California’s surfing scene. His body of work reads like a who’s who in the rock world, from famous album covers for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, to concert posters for Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Bob Dylan.

My Hero film fest announces winners
Professionals and students from around the globe will be honored for short films celebrating heroes from all walks of life at the fifth annual MY HERO Short Film Festival on Saturday at USC’s Norris Theatre. The award-winning films can be viewed at myhero.com/winners09.
The top winner in the high school category was filmed in Laguna Beach. “Have a Home Run Day,” directed by John Barrett and produced by Aaron Fong and Austin Dodge, is about Skipper Carrillo, a hometown hero who inspires everyone he meets.
“Home is Where You Find It,” filmed in Maputo, Mozambique, won “Best of Fest” award. Sixteen-year-old Alcides Soares directs this documentary about his life as an AIDS orphan and his search for family.
“Biblioburro: The Donkey Library,” won in the professional category. It was directed by Valentina Canavesio and filmed in La Gloria, Colombia. Luis Soriano, a teacher in the small town travels on the back of his donkey, bringing books for children of the rural communities.

Yasuko show opens at Arin
Arin Contemporary Art will opens its newest exhibition, “Yasuko: Snow White Revisited 2008,” and “Back to the Drawing Board: A New Look at Contemporary Drawing,” with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 350-352 N. Coast Hwy.
“Snow White Revisited 2008” is an exploration of the Laguna Beach photographer’s notions of America as portrayed through Disney stories. Born in a Post World War II Japanese household, Yasuko’s images play with the disparity between a fantastical world of color against other stark childhood realities.
Each image is a composite of scenes that explore feminine roles and social realities.
The exhibition is up until Jan. 22.

Festival applications now available
The Festival of Arts will run from July 5 to Aug. 31.
Artists who would like to apply for the 2010 Festival of Arts should submit a CD with three digital images per media and a completed application form to the Festival of Arts by 4 p.m. Jan. 22.

The Festival of Arts accepts applications from artists residing in: Aliso Viejo, Balboa, Balboa Island, Capistrano Beach, Coto de Caza, Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, Foothill Ranch, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Ladera Ranch, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest (El Toro), Mission Viejo, Monarch Beach, Newport Beach, Newport Coast, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
Artists must be able to show that they have resided in one of the aforementioned cities for at least one year prior to Jan. 22. Jurying fees are $50 per medium submitted.
The jurors will score the submitted artwork based on quality, intention and content; excellence of craftsmanship; facility with media; excellence in the use of design elements; and professional presentation.
The 2010 Festival of Arts jurors are Jacques Garnier, Barbara Hendricks, Fred Hope, Bill Hudson, Bernie M. Jones, Jr., Donita Lloyd, Mia Moore and Jon Seeman.
Workshops slated
To learn more about the Festival of Arts, the application process and photographing artwork, artists are invited to attend a free seminar from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Forum Theatre on the Festival of Arts grounds.

Pure Light hosts ‘wish tree’ for CSP
Pure Light Celebrations Candle Studio will host a tree in the Festival Center, 821 Laguna Canyon Road, and fill it with ornaments that contain the wishes of the kids living at the Laguna Beach CSP Children’s Residential Program.
This year, ornaments will also be available at Pure Light’s new Irvine Spectrum Center location. Stop by Nov. 28 and take an ornament from the tree that contains a wish that you would like to fulfill.
All unwrapped donations need to be dropped off at Pure Light by Dec. 21 for timely delivery.
The CSP Children’s Residential Program is a crisis residential program available to children in Orange County referred by the Orange County Heath Care Agency and Youth Services. CSP is a short-term crisis intervention program for at-risk children from 11 to 17.
The residential program is designed to support family changes, so that teens and parents can reunite and find the closeness that they had previously enjoyed.
CSP professionals work with the teens to explore their options, and support them in finding a safe and more nurturing place to live. CSP is in Laguna Beach and serves South Orange County.
The wish list includes gift certificates, art and learning supplies, enjoyment, cooking and cleaning their space, clothing, and the special wish of a mentor.
Their wish list also includes the wish of sponsoring an outing that is educational or a physical activity, or adopt a day to decorate the shelter for the holidays.

Redfern hosts Hull exhibition
The Redfern Gallery will present “In Search of Light,” a new collection of paintings by nationally acclaimed American Impressionist Gregory Hull.
Hull’s work is represented in numerous personal and corporate collections throughout the United States.
A major painting by Hull is featured in the Meadows Del Mar Country Club as the resort’s signature painting. He also dedicated a year to a major project for Nestle USA, creating a series of 30 paintings.
The Montage Resort and Spa displays “Owens Valley,” a painting of stately cottonwood trees, in the main lobby as part of their permanent collection.
