Police Files:
Someone is $800 richer after pulling a fast one on a manager at the Red Robin restaurant in Newport Beach.
Last week, the manager at the Red Robin, 687 Newport Center Drive, reported that someone called her restaurant claiming to be a police officer.
The “officer” convinced the woman that one of her employees had been arrested and needed to be bailed out. The manager wired more than $800 through MoneyGram to the person. No employee was actually arrested, police said.
Sgt. Evan Sailor said it’s a familiar scam usually perpetrated against the elderly, who are convinced one of their children or grandchildren has been arrested.
