CdM falls in shootout
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Corona del Mar High’s football team wanted to start off November the way it started October — with a win.
The Sea Kings last victory was a shutout against Magnolia on Oct. 2 and since then they entered Friday having lost all three of their Pacific Coast League games. During the skid, they put up just six points and allowed 70.
CdM (4-5, 0-4 in league) scored plenty of points Friday, but still it wasn’t enough. That’s because San Juan Hills outlasted the Sea Kings, 49-42, at Tesoro High.
“We have been in a funk offensively so it was kind of nice to get out of that, get something moving, sustain some drives and keep the defense off the field a little bit,” CdM Coach Jason Hitchens said. “What we really needed was a couple stops defensively.”
The one stop Hitchens would’ve liked to have had was a fourth-and-goal play on the 22-yard line at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
According to the Stallions’ assistant coaches, kicker George Winckel can kick a field goal up to 40 yards and Head Coach Greg Gibson did not know if going for it or kicking it was the right play.
After a timeout to discuss it with his coordinators, Gibson sent out quarterback Wil Acromite instead of Winckel, and Acromite threw a perfect fade pass to wide receiver Michael Perryman for a touchdown, which was the game-winner.
“I thought about it and at the end of the day, I just said our guy is better than their guy and let him make a play and make [the defender] play,” Gibson said.
CdM’s defense allowed 540 combined offensive yards, including seven plays of over 22 yards and 413 all-purpose yards from Acromite, and dropped to 0-4 in the PCL.
“When you play that offense, you have to play assignment football,” Hitchens said. “I would say when we look at film, we’ll find that some assignments were broken down along the way.”
CdM’s offense, led by senior Alex Swigert’s 303 yards rushing and three TDs on 41 carries, did not punt once.
“We found something [Friday] that at least worked for us and we can build on, go into next week, try to win [at Beckman Friday] and finish with some dignity,” Hitchens said.
