Freshman libero Kristin Winkler had a career-high 30 digs for UCI, but UOP improved to 16-7, 6-5.

MEN’S WATER POLO
Cal 13, UC Irvine 10
BERKELEY — The No. 2-ranked Golden Bears turned a 2-2 game into an 8-3 halftime lead and held on in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday at UC Berkeley.
Griffin Lerman and Brandon Johnson each had two goals to lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters (13-7, 1-2 in conference).
Cal improved to 15-4, 3-1.
CROSS COUNTRY
Big West Championships
RIVERSIDE — The UC Irvine men finished sixth and the women eighth at UC Riverside Saturday.
Sam Hyams was 24th to pace the UCI men, covering 8,000 meters in 25 minutes, 2 seconds. Rex Nelson (28th in 25:14.0), Brett Matejka (32nd in 25:22.4), Austin Williams (33rd in 25:22.6), Victor Bonilla (36th in 25:29) and Barrett Tilley (41st in 25:36.5) also competed for the Anteaters.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won the men’s title with 28 points.
Melissa Mead was UCI’s top woman finisher, placing 28th in 21:48.4 over 6,000 meters.
Shelby Pock (39th in 22:14.1) and Chloe Fata (43rd in 22:25.0) contributed for the Anteaters.
