Wet ‘N’ Wild with Rockin’ Fig:

The Assn. of Surfing Professionals world championship tour, Billabong Pro Mundaka in Spain, was forced to move to Sopelana Beach to finish the event in some windblown 2- to 3-foot surf last week.

Brazilian ripper Adriano de Souza seems to excel in those kinds of conditions and took advantage of them, racking some slashing moves on the lefts to take out nine-time world champ Kelly Slater in the semis by the slimmest of margins, .07, and then taking it to Aussie Dave Davidson, who made his first championship tour final. De Souza finished with 16.40 to Davidson’s 11.83, as the hot Brazilian moves up to third in the standings.

Australian Mick Fanning moved into the lead when fellow Aussie Joel Parkinson stumbled in the close race in Round 2, but Fanning couldn’t capitalize much, as he lost in Round 3 and is leading by a slim 44 points.

The big boys are straight into another event at the Rip Curl Pro Search in Peniche, Portugal, where the waiting period started Monday and goes till Oct. 30. The event will be at Supertubes, where the surf has been big and stormy. When it cleans up, they’ll try to get the surf event going.

Huntington Beach’s Brett Simpson, just off placing third in the semifinals at a big surf contest in Brazil, showed up to a surf class team meeting at Huntington Beach High School on Monday. He gave an inspirational speech about doing your best and staying in school to get a good education and even evaluated a contest win against Marina High School’s surf team.

Today at Brookhurst Street, Huntington Beach High will be surfing it out against crosstown rival Edison High School’s surf team, another of the Sunset League’s superpowers. This year’s Oiler squad features Captain Christian Saenz, a National Scholastic Surfing Assn. standout, along with Evan Kane and Shayne Nelson, both shredders in the men’s. The women’s squad features Anissa Galindo, who was also up for homecoming queen, and freshman Paige Ortiz, who has been winning lots of heats lately.

Last week at the Huntington Beach Pier, the surf was going off, anywhere from 4 to 10-foot plus. The south side saw Ryan Turner, Teddy Navarro, Ryan Carlson and Jesse Evans getting some super-deep Indo-looking barrels.

And the north side was bowling, too, with Micah Byrne, John Davis, the Figster and Chad “Chado” Masri getting way deep, too.

A fundraiser is going on for old school surfer-shaper-singer Steve Reehl at the Blue Café on Saturday. Some punk bands will be jamming at the benefit to help pay some medical costs.

Over and out.
