Sailors simply unbeatable

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Last year the Newport Harbor High girls’ golf team came oh so close to completing an undefeated regular season, losing one match.
But the Sailors came through Thursday and finished 19-0, 10-0 in the Sunset League after beating Edison, 199-238, at Mile Square Golf Course. Newport Harbor’s score was one shot from tying the Sailors’ lowest of the season.
Senior Lauren Draganza shot even-par 36 to earn medalist honors. Senior Lindsey Hanna (38), sophomore Charlotte Skjonsby (40) and seniors Morgan Moody (41) and Casey Jones (44) also contributed.
“They had a blast,” Newport Harbor Coach Scott Tarnow said of the Sailors, who are 36-1 over the past two seasons. “They’ve worked so hard. You try not to think about it, but we went for the undefeated season last year. And even today the pressure builds. But the last two matches we played real well. We blew out Corona del Mar [Wednesday] and we played for another good score against Edison. They were ecstatic and had lots of fun.”
Newport Harbor will compete in the league finals Monday at Los Serrano Country Club in Chino Hills.
