Man rescued on Back Bay trail

An elderly man was rescued Wednesday morning after he went down a path in the Newport Beach’s Back Bay that he couldn’t climb back up, authorities said today.
The 70-year-old man’s black Labrador led him down a thin path on the east side of the bay, west of Park Newport, said Newport Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Chip Duncan. The trail dead ends at the edge of a 40-foot ravine and the climb up was too steep for the man to get traction, Duncan said.
Firefighters positioned themselves below the man. They raised a ladder for him to walk down safely, Schulz said.
The man and his dog were uninjured.
