A Corona del Mar teenager was arrested on suspicion of robbery Sunday after police said she kicked a plainclothes security guard in the leg when he confronted her about possibly shoplifting.
Leah Natalie Zarian, 19, was arrested by Newport Beach police outside of a Rite Aid near San Miguel Drive and San Joaquin Hills Road while running away from a security guard, Sgt. Evan Sailor said.
Police said security saw her walk inside the Rite Aid, put $33 worth of eye makeup, lip balm and other items in her purse and leave without paying. When she was confronted by the security guard, she kicked him and ran, Sailor said.
Officers responding to the incident arrested her as she ran through the parking lot, he said. Zarian has since pleaded not guilty to a lesser charge of petty theft and is due back in court Oct. 28.
