Community & Clubs:

“It started with ZeroTrash Laguna earlier in the year, and as of this month has expanded into Newport Beach, primarily on the Peninsula for obvious reasons,” said Greg Kelley, a community activist.

Its affiliation here is appropriately called Zero Trash Newport.

“Its goal is to help maintain the beauty of the communities along the beaches and make an environmental difference in a very simple but effective way — by organizing community volunteers of all ages to pick up the litter/trash on our city streets and beaches that otherwise might be missed by city crews. Stuff like the thousands of cigarette butts and wrappings from fast-food restaurants that get discarded by those who are careless ... litter that can create an eyesore and often ends up on our beaches, sidewalks and streets, and ultimately through storm sewers can end up polluting the ocean and our other water ways,” Kelley said.

Volunteers of all ages come together at 10 a.m. the first Saturday of the month, in front of one or several of the sponsoring business store fronts, and take off from there. The next first Saturday is Nov. 7. Business sponsors provide the volunteers with their identifiable bright red T-shirts, as well as the supplies they need like trash bags, pickers, etc.

“It’s a great community project providing service hours for kids in our local schools, and for anyone who would like to meet a great group of community-minded people,” Kelley said.

MUSIC FROM THE HEART

A review in The Los Angeles Times describes the singing of soprano Susan Montgomery as “an exceptional voice soaring with fluid purity and point, delivering a performance that promises to linger in the audience’s memory.”

Dramatically gifted and versatile, this much sought after concert artist will join equally acclaimed Los Angeles Opera tenor Jonathan Mack for a joint recital, “Music From the Heart,” at 4 p.m. Sunday.

L.A. Times music critic Martin Bernheimer wrote that “Mr. Mack is a sensitive actor, a musician of remarkable refinement, and the owner of an extraordinarily sweet and ever growing tenor (voice).”

Both artists have appeared abroad and with our country’s major symphony orchestras, are in demand as soloists in concerts and music festivals, and in the recording industry.

The church is at 2850 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. The concert is free to the public, although a freewill offering will be taken. For more information, call the church office at (714) 557-3340.

WORTH REPEATING

Thought for the Day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council… “You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”

— Woodrow Wilson
