NORTHRIDGE — Junior Spencer Thompson scored two goals and junior keeper Victor Chinchilla picked up his first career shutout to lead the UC Irvine men’s soccer team to a 3-0 Big West Conference win against host Cal State Northridge Saturday.

Senior Irving Garcia took a pass from senior Carlos Aguilar and scored from eight yards out in the 10th minute for 1-0 UCI lead.

Thompson then took in a pass from senior Kevin Santora and put it into the right hand side of the net to give the ’Eaters a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute.

Thompson then sealed the victory off an assist from Garcia as he put it into the lower left hand side of the net in the 88th minute.

The Anteaters are 8-4, 1-2 in conference.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, Embry-Riddle 0

COSTA MESA — Gabiela Valles scored twice and added an assist to lead the host Lions in the nonconference match Saturday.

Karrie Currier had a goal and assist for Vanguard (9-1), which received one save from senior goalie Jillian Foss to record its seventh shutout this season.

Vanguard had a 15-4 advantage in shots.

The visitors from Arizona fell to 2-5-3.

El CAJON — Kelsey Wirt had a match-high 20 kills to pace the visiting Lions to the 25-15, 25-23, 27-25 Golden State Athletic Conference road win Saturday.

Heather DeJongh added 15 kills and Meghan Walsh had 37 assists for the winners (13-6, 7-3 in the GSAC).

San Diego Christian fell to 8-13, 0-10.

CROSS COUNTRY

UCSD Triton Classic

LA JOLLA — The UC Irvine women’s team finished second on the UC San Diego campus Saturday.

Central Arizona won the team title with 58 points, followed by UCI with 68 and the University of Victoria with 78 in the 13-school field.

UCI redshirt freshman Melissa Mead placed fifth of 122 runners with a time of 22 minutes, 30.9 seconds over the 6,000-meter course, as Central Arizona’s Rose Tanui won the race in 21:38.0.

UCI’s Shelby Pock was 11th (22:52.9), Chloe Fata 12th (22:56.4) and Nicole Mendoza 14th (23:08.1).

Katherine Nielsen was 28th in 23:48.3, Shelley Foerster was 29th (23:49.7) and Carlotta Pham was 31st (23:52.8) .

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Vanguard University’s Christian de Glymes won the men’s 8,000-meter event in 25 minutes, 24 seconds and Orange Coast College won the men’s team title Saturday at Fairview Park.

Servio Olivarrias and Russell Westphal finished sixth and seventh overall to pace the OCC men.

Vanguard finished third as a team.

In the women’s event, OCC was second and Vanguard fourth.

OCC’s Kimone Hewitt was the top local woman finisher, placing sixth over 5,000 meters in 18:18.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UCI Invitational

IRVINE — No. 9-ranked UC Irvine split its two games Saturday, falling to No. 7 Pepperdine, 11-9, in the morning and defeating No. 14 Princeton, 15-7, in the afternoon.

Cole Bielskis with four goals and Kyle Kruip with three led UCI in the win over the Tigers. A goal by Bielskis with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter gave the Anteaters their largest lead of the game at 12-2. Mark Zalewski and Chris Cottrell led the Tigers with two goals apiece.

In the loss to Pepperdine, J.P. MacDonell scored a game-high five goals, including three in the first quarter, to lead the Waves. The Anteaters’ Trent Baxter tied the game at 9-9 on a goal with 5:30 left but Jacob Young (5:17) and Taylor Watson (3:02) scored back-to-back goals for Pepperdine to gain the victory.

The Anteaters, 7-5 on the season, face UC San Diego Sunday morning at 11:10 in a ninth-place bracket game at Corona del Mar High School.
