Mesa outguns Century

SANTA ANA — A fast start is all Costa Mesa High needed apprently to get back in the win column.

The Mustangs scored on its first six possessions and went on to beat Century, 48-34, at Segerstrom High Friday night.

Costa Mesa’s scoring spree included a 19-yard field goal by Jario Farfan, a 30-yard interception return by Brian Waldron and a 40-yard pass by Todd Davis to Luis Gomez.

Gomez also scored on a 25-yard pass by Davis and on a 67-yard run at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs were solid on the ground (Tyler Sheffner rushed for 175 yards and one TD on 16 carries) and through the air (Davis threw for 124 yards and one TD pass on six-of-12 passing).

“We really wanted it early in the game,” Mustangs’ Coach Jeremy Osso said. “We tried to grind it in the second half to run the clock and get out of here, but we did our best job of keeping them in the game.”

Century had its chances, as the Mustangs committed 10 penalties for 89 yards and turned the ball over four times on fumbles.

“[The Centurions] really did their best to bottle up Brian Waldron, who is our best threat up to this time,” Osso said. “But we are athletic enough in our skilled positions that if they stop one guy, other guys on the team can handle it.”

Mesa started quick, but the game’s ending was slow.

Century’s Jesus “Nacho” Vilebre, was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance after he lay on the ground for over 20 minutes.

With 6:52 left in the game and the Mustangs (3-3) running the ball, Century assistant coach Brian Bagley said Vilebre suffered “either a dislocated hip or a broken femur” and added he was taken to the Fountain Valley Regional Hospital for further examination.

As he was carted off the field, both teams and fans gave Vilebre a standing ovation as he raised his right arm on the stretcher and waved.

After Vilebre was carried off the field, the game continued.
