Tsunami advisory along coast
The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami advisory for coastal California and Oregon following a huge earthquake in the Samoan Islands around 11 a.m. Pacific time.
“Persons in tsunami advisory areas should move out of the water, off the beach and out of harbors and marinas,” the weather service stated.
“Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near water is imminent or expected. Significant widespread inundation is not expected for areas in an advisory. Tsunamis are a series of waves potentially dangerous several hours after initial arrival time.”
If a tsunami is generated, it is expected to arrive in Southern California shortly after 8 p.m. tonight, the weather service stated.
