CdM boys perfect in tournament

The Corona del Mar Junior Water Polo Program’s 12-and-under boys’ team went undefeated en route to winning the Pacific Fall Classic Tournament Sunday in San Diego.

The squad wasn’t the only team that earned success at the tournament. The CdM 10-and-under co-ed team tied for first place and the boys’ 14-and-under squad went 4-1.

Junior Midget Division

Eagles Silver 44, Montebello 20

The Eagles improved to 2-1 in their division. They have not gotten off to a hot start in any game this year, and this game was no different starting off with Eagles fumbles on their first three possessions. However, the Eagles defense, led by linebackers Nick Bennett, Bradley Williams and defensive end Ollie Ferris, held steady and did not allow any points following the turnovers.

The Eagles settled down as the first quarter wore on and broke through on their fourth offensive possession with the first of six touchdowns by Justin Young to take a 6-0 lead. Montebello responded by tying the score at 6-6. Then on the Eagles’ next possession the Bulldogs returned a fumble recovery 60 yards for a touchdown to go up 13-6. The Eagles however, had a quick and definitive response as Young took the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown sending the Eagles into halftime trailing, 13-12.

In the third quarter, the Eagles quickly took control of the game as they received the opening kickoff and marched the ball down field capping the drive with another rushing touchdown by Young to open a 19-12 margin. From that point they never looked back. The third quarter saw two more touchdowns over 50 yards from Young. In the fourth quarter, Young and Christian Chapin added short touchdown runs.

Junior Pee Wee Division

Eagles Silver 39, Anaheim 13

Silver had another strong outing controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Eight different players scored led by Gage Roberson with one touchdown and two PATs. Cole Kinder (one TD), Mason Lindh (one TD), Anthony De La Torre (one TD), Christian Veit (one PAT), Steven Muise (one PAT) and Jack Cornuke (one TD) also contributed, while Christian Ferraro scored with a reception in the end zone. Rashaan Burns and Trenton Raines came up one yard short on their attempts to score. Andrew Laidlaw, Jonathan Muise, Narciso Montes, and Zack Swies controlled the defensive side of the ball giving the Silver Eagles their third win for the season.

Eagles Black 26, Fullerton Titans 7

The Eagles improved to 4-0. Next week they will battle it out in Norwalk against the undefeated Lancers.

The Eagles’ offense led the game covering 252 yards.

Yet, it was the Eagles’ defense that stole the show. Very few, if any, tackles were missed, causing many turnovers close to the Titan end zone. Atencio lead the tackles at 14. He also recorded an interception and had an onside kick recovery.

The Eagles’ coaching staff recognized Christian Baskharoon as their player of the game with his 14 tackles and his leadership throughout the contest and all week in practice.

Youth Club Soccer

The Slammers Maroon girls’ U-11 team opened the 2009 Coast Soccer League season winning its first three games.

The team, which consists of students from the Newport-Mesa area, started the season with a 3-0 win over North County Storm.

Grace Jennings, who attends Andersen Elementary, led the offense with two first half goals. Siena Ward (Newport Elementary) added a third goal in the second half.

The following weekend, the Slammers trounced Wolfpack FC, 8-0. Katrina Freiberger (Sonora) had a field day scoring five goals. Leah Givant (Andersen Elementary) Ward, and Emma Scott (Andersen Elementary) also scored to lead the offensive attack. The following day, the Slammers whitewashed North Irvine SC, 7-0, with Ward, Jennings, Freiberger and Faith Harper (St. John the Baptist) scoring in the runaway victory.

Defensively the Slammers are led by goalkeeper Destry Comp (Kaiser Elementary), Jackie Singer (Mariners Elementary), Jasi Dunk (Newport Coast Elementary), Bella Goldstein (Newport Coast Elementary), Grace Vandervort (Carden Hall) and Paige Fults (Newport Heights Elementary).

Newport Thunder Storms vs.

Costa Mesa Ballers

It proved to be an amazing day on the pitch for Team Thunder Storm, who played fantastic soccer. Their teamwork showed on the field with great communication and determination. Four goals were scored by Isabel Leveque, Kathryn De La Torre, Noelle Hubbard and Katelyn Mead. The team also worked hard on defense with Alice Barry and Emily Wolfe working it in the goal box.

Green Hornets 1, Blue Riptides 1

The Hornets displayed solid offense from front line players Olivia Blanda, Carly Van Oostendorp, Ashley Obuljen, and Kylee Seebert in the first quarter. The first goal of the game occurred during the second quarter by Ashley Obuljen. Julianna Van Oostendorp earned the assist and had two other impressive breakaways during the period. Mackenzie Mowery hustled in the fourth quarter making several advanced offensive plays. Holly Halperin played goalie first and third quarter, deflecting every shot that came her way. Lani Kerrigan also showed some serious skills in the goal during the fourth quarter. Defensive stops were made by Lexi Van Oostendorp and Chloe Hyde.

Boys Under 12

The Red Team 5, Dill Pickels 0

Sohrob Goodarzy started the scoring with a brilliant shot from outside the 18-yard line. The Red Team continued the pressure, two goals by midfield general Griffin Burke and one goal each by lefties Cooper Peters and Brian Shaw completed the shutout. The defense of The Red Team was tenacious anchored by Liam Tough and excellent goalkeeping of Sargis Srapyan and Corbin Joyce (in the second half). Constant hustle of Sean Arnold and Spencer Swanson created many opportunities for the speedy forward Alex Michaelson. Henry Levis and Max Spruill were instrumental in stopping many attacks by the Dill Pickles in the second half.

Boys Under 10

Orange Crush 4, Gladiators 2

Marcus Croxson and Ryan Pham played great in defensive positions, as did Garrett Gritzmacher and Gage Greenberg. All four were instrumental in clearing the ball and passing it successfully to teammates. Connor Spence had a shot on goal in the second quarter, a save as goalkeeper in the third, and a tremendous fourth quarter as a defender, booting the ball up field several times to his teammates. Jonny Rimlinger made great traps when the ball was passed to him. Quinn Richards, Connor Spence and Scott Ryder all had shots on goal in the first half, with Scott Ryder scoring two goals. Scott Ryder scored another goal in the third quarter and the fourth goal of the game was scored by Quinn Richards in the last quarter.

Newport FC 2, Aztecs 2

Captains Justan Gizer and Kyle Burger led the team during a match against a tough Aztecs squad. Newport FC fell behind but drew even in the second half on clever goals by Jack Pitchess, who resumed his league-leading scoring campaign. Julian Hernandez and Garrett Gendron did a great job winning the ball and challenging opponents up front. Hunter Bostwick,Thomas Vredenburgh and Lucas Mowery controlled the middle of the field by winning and distributing the ball. Bobby Schulze and Burger proved to be a dynamic defensive combination along with attentive second half keeper duties from Gizer. This week’s Game Ball honors went to Schulze.

Orange Crush vs. Shooting Stars

There was a great clash on Saturday at Newport Heights between the Orange Crush and Shooting Stars. The Crush were led by Kaia Pronger who netted three goals for her first career hat trick. Jayd Sprague assisted on one of Pronger’s goals while netting one of her own in this hotly contested battle. On defense the Crush were led by Lauren Braun, Amanda Wertheimer, Sophia Thomas and Kelsey Cox. The pace of play was controlled by the midfield of Peyton Kassouf, McKenna Kummerfeldt and Alex Terry.

Boys Under 8

Green Bullets v. Hurricanes

The Green Bullets had another strong game. Their great defensive effort was led by a goal-saving play from Indiana Pullis, who supported the outstanding goaltending of Tommy Kennedy, Ryan Steinke and Chandler Airth. Cole McCunniff, Ezer DeAlmeida and Jordan Dore constantly controlled the ball at midfield and started numerous scoring opportunities. Jackson Bryant and Zach Forbath showed great ball control and passing throughout the game, with a perfect Forbath pass leading to a goal by Luke Bashore. Forbath also created his own goal, leading a great team effort.

GI Joes vs. Scorpions

Peninsula Park was the scene of an outstanding match between the GI Joes and the Scorpions. This low scoring battle was attributed to the defensive prowess of the Joes’ Jack Flores, Dylan Miller and Will Schneider. The GI Joes kept the offensive pressure on the entire game with superb ball handling by Charlie Durham, Nick Sharamitaro, and Jack Bibb. Michael Gallegos made strong contributions on both sides of the ball. This head to head match climaxed in the final seconds of the game when Brett Johnson made a dramatic steal and broke away from midfield setting up the Joe’s second goal by Blake Jackson.

Girls Under 7

Blue Thunder vs. Orange Crush

Eliana Gottlieb scored two great goals in the third quarter while Chloe Swanson scored her third goal of the season, Maya Nadeau, Brynn Robinson and Gabrielle Babin drove the ball down the field showing fantastic control and making great passes. Grace Vaughan made two great saves in goal and Ava Gonzales, Isabella Burrill and Emma Kubiak showed wonderful defensive skills. The team did a great job communicating and not bunching together.

Boys Under 7

Fighter Jets vs. Jedi Knights

The Fighter Jets were tough on both sides of the ball against the Jedi Knights. Joseph Whelan scored two goals for the Fighter Jets — one in the first quarter and one in the last. Joining him with an amazing crossfield goal at the end of the game was Marcus Miller, scoring his first of the season. Aidan Gassel, Finn McClintock and Jake Nellesen each had at least one shot on goal. On defense, Richie Rimlinger and Gassel made some good stops. Whelan and Miller both did a great job of clearing the ball. McClintock saved a goal with a slide tackle, and the whole team worked together at the end of the game to form a wall and protect the Fighter Jet goal.
