IRVINE — The Anteaters improved to 5-0 after sweeping Northeastern 26-24, 25-10, 25-22 at the UCI Classic Friday at Crawford Court.

Kari Pestolesi earned MVP honors for the second consecutive tournament while Riley Cropper, Taryn Robertson and Kristin Winkler were voted to the all-tournament team.

Pestolesi led all players with 15 kills and recorded two service aces to share the lead with Robertson. Juliane Piggott was errorless for the Anteaters, putting away seven of 13 kills for a season-high .538 hitting percentage. Senior McCall Miller registered a match-high 14 digs while Robertson also did not commit an error on the offensive end, hitting .778 (7-0-9) while recording 33 assists and nine digs.

UCI will play host to University of Maryland-Batimore County today at 5 p.m. at Crawford Court.

In the first match Friday against Montana, Pestolesi had 18 kills, followed by Riley Cropper (12, with a .579 hitting percentage) and Juliane Piggott with 10.

Freshman libero Kristin Winkler had 18 kills and had all four of her team’s ace serves.

Pestolesi added 14 digs for the Anteaters, who won 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-14.

COSTA MESA — The Lions improved to 6-1, winning two matches at the Crowne Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival Friday.

Vanguard, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, defeated Westminster, 27-29, 25-17, 25-17, 30-28, to close out the night. Kelsey Wirt led the Lions with 15 kills, while Heather DeJongh and Lisa Morgan added 14 kills each. Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, contributed 12 kills. Meghan Walsh had 28 assists and Alexandra Leja added 24 assists. Ariel Strickler led Vanguard with 32 digs.

The Lions also beat Montana Tech, 25-22, 25-21, 25-13. Wirt led the way with 16 kills and Heenan produced a match-high 13 digs. Walsh and Leja had 17 assists each.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 2, Palomar 0

SAN MARCOS — The Pirates used a pair of second-half goals in nonconference action on Friday at Palomar.

In the 50th minutes, Derek Woody took a pass from Jordan Gorman and beat the Comets’ goalkeeper to give Orange Coast (2-1) a 1-0 advantage.

It would stay that way until the 82nd minute when Will Munoz, a Newport Harbor High product, fed a nice pass to Takuma Hori, who found the back of the net to wrap up the team’s scoring.

Zakre Silva picked up the shutout win with six saves.
