Boat crashes into Newport dock

One boat left a lot more than waves in its wake Monday when an instrument malfunction sent it through a dock and almost into the Cannery restaurant in Newport Beach.

Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol officials said that just before 2 p.m., the 73-foot Capri yacht began to maneuver out of its slip near the Blue Water Grill with 14 people onboard and the controls malfunctioned.

The boat tore out two cleats from the nearby dock and continued forward through the Rhine channel until it went aground next to the Cannery. It cut about 15 feet into the dock, seriously damaging it, said Sgt. David Ginther. The boat had only minor damage, and no one was injured, officials said.
