Boy still in critical condition

An 11-year-old boy remained in critical condition Wednesday after police said he and another child jumped in front of a car on Wilson Street on Tuesday night.

Konrad Osgood of Costa Mesa was bleeding from his brain and underwent emergency surgery Tuesday night after he and 8-year-old Antonio Fair of Costa Mesa were hit by a car as they walked with two adults and six other children to Wilson Park, off Wilson Street and Fordham Road.

Police said the two adults were guiding the eight children north to the park and had stopped on the island between Wilson Street’s eastbound and westbound lanes when Osgood and Fair darted ahead into westbound traffic.

Ariel Claudio Mendoza, 35, of Newport Beach, struck them while driving about 25 mph, police said.

Authorities said alcohol was not a factor, and Mendoza was not arrested or cited for the crash.

Fair was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital for bruises. Osgood is being treated at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

Police are still investigating the collision.
