Frank Alexander Rhodes, Jr.
Frank Alexander Rhodes,
Jr. passed away peacefully
on August 11, 2009 at
his home in Newport
Beach at age 93. Born in
Montgomery, Alabama to
Frank and Ethel Rhodes in
1916, he graduated from the
University of Alabama in
Aeronautical Engineering
with honors and was a
member of Tau Beta Pi
honorary engineering society.
In 1936 he was recruited
by Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, California, where he
worked in engineering and management of building aircraft
before and during World War II. There he met his future
business partner, Gill B. Causey, with whom he formed a
building and development partnership in the mid 1940’s
and over the next 55 years built many diverse projects
including Crenshaw Medical Plaza, high rise apartments on
Wilshire Blvd, Glendale Fashion Center, Newport Center
Medical Plaza, the Granville luxury apartments, and the
Sand Canyon Medical Office Building. He shared his love
for skiing, riding horses, boating, tennis and flying with his
family and friends throughout his life.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his beloved
wife of 43 years, Jane Cooper Rhodes, his sons Eugene
S. Rhodes and Loyd E. Wright III, his daughters Susan
Rhodes Matijasevic, Julie Wright Reilly, and Marily Wright
Anton, his 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren,
his brothers, William and Spears Rhodes of Montgomery,
Alabama, and his sister, Ethel Rhodes Hosmer of Carlsbad.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Stockwell
Rhodes, in1962 and by their oldest son, Frank A. Rhodes
III in 1996.
Funeral services will be private. Donations in lieu of flowers
may be sent to “Las Madrinas” benefitting the Children’s
Hospital of Los Angeles, Dept 6778, Los Angeles, Ca.
90084-6778.
