Fire chief announces retirement

Huntington Beach Fire Chief Duane Olson announced Wednesday that he plans to retire Dec. 17. The city will begin a nationwide search for a new fire chief.

Olson, who has been the fire chief since 2003, has worked for the city for more than 39 years.

Under his leadership, the fire department has upgraded itself to ISO Class 1, which represents the most superior fire protection services available, while dealing with budget restraints.

Fire department staff say a new culture of open collaboration has been created as well.

Olson began working for the city in 1970 as a lifeguard. He became a city firefighter in 1974, and was a paramedic, captain, fire marshal, battalion chief and division chief before becoming the chief.

He has a master’s degree in public administration from Cal State Fullerton and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.

He is a member of several industry organizations and a board member with Huntington Beach Hospital.

Before leaving, Olson said he hopes to develop a consolidation plan for the Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley fire departments; relocate Fire Station 8; complete an equipment modernization plan; and finalize a three-year strategic plan.

“My career with the city of Huntington Beach Fire Department has been challenging and rewarding,” Olson said in a release.

“I have been fortunate to be able to spend more than 39 years with the city. We have accomplished many goals and I am very proud of the achievements of the Fire Department.”
