All local teams go unbeaten

The first day of the California State High School Water Polo Championships turned out to be a perfect one for Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar Friday.

The boys’ and girls’ teams from the local schools won two matches each to stay atop their respective groups.

The Newport Harbor boys, the top-seeded team, dominated in their two games. They opened with a 20-5 win against Laguna Beach and then recorded a 15-7 win against JSerra at Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor continues today, trying to win its group and reach the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. at the Sailors’ pool.

Newport Harbor will play host to Menlo today at 8 a.m.

The Corona del Mar boys, No. 1 in their group, also stayed on course to reach today’s quarterfinals. They opened with a 15-8 win against Capistrano Valley at the loser’s pool.

Corona del Mar then had to squeak past Miramonte with a 12-11 victory.

Corona del Mar will start against Clovis West today at 8 a.m. at Capistrano Valley.

It’s possible for the Back Bay rivals to meet in the semifinals provided they continue to win. They would play at 11 a.m. Sunday in the semifinals at Newport Harbor.

In girls’ action, Newport Harbor is also the top seed. The Sailors opened with an 18-3 win against Clovis at Villa Park. Newport Harbor stayed on top of its group with a 14-6 victory against Agoura.

Newport Harbor will play against the host Villa Park today at 10 a.m.

The Corona del Mar girls opened with a 13-5 win against San Marcos at CdM.

They then beat Coronado, 6-4. Coronado was No. 1 in the group entering the 32-team tournament.

Corona del Mar will play against Tesoro today at 11 a.m. at CdM. Tesoro has lost twice.

The Back Bay rivals can meet today in the quarterfinals if they win their respective morning matches. The quarterfinals are at 4 p.m. at Corona del Mar.
